Like so many of the great success stories of the past, the tale of GREGORIAN also began from humble origins. No one could have predicted the level of success that would eventually be realized by one man's ingenious creation. 
 
And yet… If we turn our gaze back all the way to the beginning, before the gold and platinum awards and the millions of recordings sold. If we stopped at each country visited, paid homage to every city played and reignited the millions of hearts around the world that have been touched by the emotive music and stunning spectacles of GREGORIAN. We would discover that at one point it was all nothing more than the infant flicker of an idea. An idea from a man who had the audacity to merge two separate worlds.
 
In the year of 1989 a young Frank Peterson walked contemplatively through the royal monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain. The grounds of the medieval monastery left an indelible mark on his soul. Accompanying Peterson as he walked was the faint sound of modern-day music playing quietly through the headphones of his Walkman. Moved by the stark contrast of these two colliding worlds the initial idea of mixing ancient Gregorian music with modern day hits took hold of Peterson and the rest, as they say, is history.
 
Peterson initially brought the idea to life for the first time with Michael Cretu with the worldwide sound phenomenon Enigma. The first album MCMXC a.D. appeared in 1990 and quickly became a worldwide success story. MCMXC a.D. was number 1 in 41 different countries and received 57 platinum and 45 gold medals. It is consequently considered the most successful German album of all time.
 
The success of Enigma prompted Peterson to take a step forward with his initial idea of GREGORIAN. He established GREGORIAN as an independent music act. Their first album “Masters Of Chant” followed Peterson’s previous success with Enigma seamlessly. Over the following years GREGORIAN has sold more than 10 million recordings worldwide with 21 CDs & 9 DVDs, and has achieved gold and platinum status in 24 different countries. So far the Gregorian repertoire consists of almost 300 songs, ranging from classical music to pop standards and contemporary rock tracks of the last 40 years.
 
The concert productions themselves further reflect the individual creativity of Frank Peterson who has produced breath-taking shows in arenas, theatres, and churches that thrill fans and critics in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Almost 3 million visitors have watched GREGORIAN live at their concerts in 35 countries. 
To experience GREGORIAN live is to witness an audio and visual spectacle that in 20 years to date has never failed to procure a standing ovation from the public.
 
In 2015 GREGORIAN announced the end of the Masters Of Chant Saga with the album “The Final Chapter” which climbed to #8 in the German charts. The accompanying tour led GREGORIAN to over 80 cities across Europe.
In 2020 GREGORIAN celebrated its 20th anniversary and announced an extensive World Tour. Due to the Covid situation the tour came to an early halt with 25 shows being postponed to early 2022. 
 
On December 17, 2021 GREGORIAN released their first ever PURE CHANTS album, featuring mainly classical choral works and hymns plus some folk and pop favourites. 
The album release will be followed by their PURE CHANTS world tour,  set for all of 2023, where GREGORIAN will play more than 180 shows across Europe, Asia, North and South America.
 
In 2023, GREGORIAN started the PURE CHANTS WORLD TOUR, which covered much of Europe and came to the USA and Mexico for the very first time.

In 2025 GREGORIAN will start their big 25 YEARS ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR.
 

Frank Peterson was born in 1963 in Hamburg. After six years in Munich, Madrid and Ibiza, he now works in Hamburg and Miami, Florida. Peterson is founder of GREGORIAN and owner of Nemo Studios and omeN Music Publishing.
 
In addition to GREGORIAN, Frank Peterson has also produced and or composed tracks for artists such as Sarah Brightman, Andrea Bocelli, Enigma, Ofra Haza, Alannah Myles, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, Paul Stanley, Josh Groban, Tom Jones, Backstreet Boys, Marky Mark, Nevio und Sandra. He has also contributed to numerous compositions and productions of international film scores and advertising campaigns. 

Die Idee zu GREGORIAN entstand, als der Hamburger Musikproduzent Frank Peterson im Jahre 1989 das königliche Kloster von San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spanien  besuchte. Durch die mittelalterliche Kloster- und Schlossanlage wandelnd und aktuelle Musik auf seinem Walkman hörend fand er die Inspiration zu dem Soundexperiment, die altertümliche gregorianische Musik mit moderner Unterhaltungsmusik zu mischen.

Umgesetzt hat Peterson die Idee erstmals mit Michael Cretu mit dem weltweiten Sound-Phänomen Enigma. Das erste Album MCMXC a.D. erschien 1990 und wurde schon nach kurzer Zeit ein weltweiter Erfolg. MCMXC a.D. war Nummer 1 in 41 verschiedenen Ländern und erhielt 57 mal Platin und 45 mal Gold und gilt als das weltweit erfolgreichste Deutsche Album aller Zeiten.

Dieser Erfolg bereitete den Weg, die Idee von GREGORIAN einen Schritt weiter zu entwickeln und als eigenständigen Musik-Act zu etablieren. 1999, mit dem ersten Album „Masters Of Chant“ knüpfte Frank Peterson nahtlos an den Erfolg von Enigma an. In den folgenden Jahren konnte GREGORIAN mit bislang 21 CDs und 9 DVDs über 10 Millionen Tonträger weltweit verkaufen und Gold- und Platin-Status in 24 verschiedenen Ländern erzielen.

Mindestens einmal im Jahr durchstreift Frank Peterson seine umfangreiche Musiksammlung, um auf die Suche nach neuem Repertoire zu gehen. Denn die Songs für ein Projekt wie Gregorian auszuwählen, braucht viel Fingerspitzengefühl und Inspiration. „Nicht jeder Song eignet sich für die Gregorianische Tonskala“, erklärt er, „daher muss man bei der Auswahl für Gregorian sehr sorgfältig sein.“ Umso glücklicher kann man sein, dass das immens große Repertoirewissen Petersons unerschöpflich scheint, und dass seinem Einfallsreichtum keine Grenzen gesetzt sind. Inzwischen besteht das Gregorian Repertoire aus fast 300 Songs die von Klassik von Carl Orff über Pop-Standards der letzten 40 Jahre bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Rock-Acts wie Metallica, Coldplay, U2 und selbst Rammstein reicht.

Aber bei Gregorian passt all das zusammen, bildet eine Einheit und entführt die Hörer mit berühmten Melodien in völlig neuem Sound in die zeitlose Welt des Gregorianischen Chorals.

Die individuelle Kreativität von Frank Peterson findet sich auch bei den Konzertproduktionen von GREGORIAN wieder. Peterson produziert atemberaubende Shows in Arenen, Theatern und Kirchen, die Fans und Kritiker in Europa, Asien, nahen Osten und Afrika begeistern. Fast 3 Million Besucher haben GREGORIAN bei ihren Konzerten in 35 Ländern live gesehen. 2013 war mit über 150 ausverkauften Konzerten das bisher erfolgreichste Tourneejahr für GREGORIAN. Erstmals war das Musikprojekt auch für 5 Konzert in China.

GREGORIAN Live ist immer ein audio-visuelles Spektakel und somit ist es obligatorisch, dass es in 20 Jahren bis heute kein einziges Gregorian Konzert ohne Standing Ovations gab.

Für Produzent und Mastermind Frank Peterson ist dies jedoch kein Grund sich zurückzulehnen.  Nach 4-Monatiger Produktionsphase erschien 2015 das letzte Kapitel der Masters Of Chant Saga. „The Final Chapter“ stieg auf Platz 8 der Deutschen Albumcharts ein und die dazugehörige Tournee führte GREGORIAN in mehr als 80 Städte quer durch Europa.

2020 beging GREGORIAN das 20-jährige Jubiläum und ging auf große Welt-Tour. Auf dem mehr als zweistündigen Programm standen die großen musikalischen Meilensteine der beispiellosen Karriere des weltweit erfolgreichsten Chor wie „Moment Of Peace“, „Nothing Else Matters“, „With Or Without You“ sowie die Highlights aus den aufwendigen Live-Produktionen der letzten Jahre im Mittelpunkt.

GREGORIAN meldete sich zur dunklen Jahreszeit 2021 mit einem neuen Studioalbum: PURE CHANTS erschien am 17. Dezember. 
 
PURE CHANTS ist genau das, was der Titel verspricht. Getreu dem Motto: "In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft", haben Gregorian die Hälfte der Lieder auf PURE CHANTS weitgehend ohne instrumentale Begleitung aufgenommen und sich ganz auf die Kraft und Schönheit der menschlichen Stimme verlassen. 
Der jüngste Zuwachs in der beeindruckenden Gregorian-Diskographie enthält alles, was man sich für eine entspannte dunkle Jahreszeit wünschen kann und lädt mit den puristischen Chorgesängen dazu ein, die Seele baumeln zu lassen. 
Die neu interpretierten Klassik-Hits, christliche Hymnen und Folk-Evergreens wie Pie Jesu, Ameno, Ode To Joy oder Sound Of Silence erstrahlen dabei in neuem, puristischem Glanze. Gregorian pur!


2023 gingen GREGORIAN auf große PURE CHANTS WORLD TOUR. Allein in Deutschland waren 70 Termine im Vorverkauf. Es folgten weitere Konzerte in Europa sowie in 2024 zum ersten Mal überhaupt Konzerte USA und Mexiko, die ein umjubelndes Publikum vorfanden.

Am 15.11.2024 erscheint nun endlich das lang erwartete neue Jubilee-Doppel-Album "25/2025" mit wundervollen Neuinterpretationen sowie 13 brandneuen Songs.

und ab dem 16.01.2025 gehen GREGORIAN auf ihre große 25 YEARS JUBILEE WORLD TOUR. 

Frank Peterson wurde 1963 in Hamburg geboren. Nach einem sechsjährigen Aufenthalt in München, Madrid und auf Ibiza arbeitet er heute in Hamburg und Key Biscayne, Florida. Peterson ist Gründer von GREGORIAN und Inhaber der Nemo Studios und des omeN Musikverlags.
